Digital Outlook 2009

A colleague of mine recently passed on Razorfish’s Digital Outlook Report for 2009 to me. I happily lapped up the 100+ pages of the report, which contain some great content on industry concerns, emerging trends and outlook for the year ahead.

Some key takeouts for me (and a large portion of the report) were not surprisingly, on social media. (Or as Razorfish has coined and trademarked “Social Influence Marketing”). Also of interest were mobile trends. Some points below:

  • Social media will develop and clients’ application will be more sophisticated as it is increasingly being involved in brand and communications strategy
  • “Friendsters” (social media friends) will become more “valuable” as users take for granted the presence of social media in their lives
  • Measurement is still the name of the game, as lack of standardised reporting and understanding of the value of social media campaigns continue
  • Social media research and researchers will therefore be sought after as they create meaning around the topic
  • Mobile marketing and mobile development will grow more sophisticated as Smartphone uptake increases and manufacturers develop more competitive devices, while mobile apps continue to be refined (including rad stuff like augmented reality apps)
