The 411 on Augmented Reality
Now for something fun! Baudrillard would hyperventilate in his grave if he knew this technology existed. But just the facts below:
What.
Augmented Reality overlays computer generated virtual reality multimedia over real life interfaces shown in real time. What does that mean? You can use your webcam or Smartphone or a specially designed interface to show projected virtual reality images/audio in real environments.
When.
Tom Caudell supposedly coined the phrase in 1990. HyperFactory launched its campaign in 2007. Google released its Wikitude app on 2008.
Who.
HyperFactory created an award-winning campaign for Wellington Zoo (supposedly the first to use AR it in a marketing capacity); GE, Mini, Ford, Nike and Lego have all made AR campaigns, Google’s G1 AR app is expected to rival iphone’s open developer apps, including some AR ones, Vuzix have created these wicked AR goggles.
Why.
The implications for marketing are enormous. Creating a rich, novel and engaging user experience in a cluttered marketplace; development in mobile platforms and applications, and outdoor augmented reality all create that needed extra value for consumers and their lifestyle, not to mention the wow factor!
