Twitter vs. the Logies

Last night, I repeatedly LOL’d at the numerous live coverage updates of the TV Week Logie Awards 2009. For you non-Aussies, The Logies is Australia’s television entertainment industry awards. It’s arguably, our *ahem* Emmys. In my opinion, Aussies have always had an ambivalent relationship with the Logies, because while it celebrates Aussie TV talent, it can also serve to highlight our lack of it.

Last night, as I mentioned, provided many funny moments of live coverage, except I actually didn’t watch the award ceremony. The updates I got were from none other than Twitter. As one of the top trending topics for the night I received blow by blow updates of the #logies. Some were complementary, most were negative, many were hilarious. You can see live updates here (note that you have to be logged in to Twitter). Below are a few samples:

“That chick on the logies now looks like she’s wearing a poodle”

“Who is this chick hosting the logies?? really really bad. Let’s blame the financial crisis”

“can smell the urine in kristi hinzes (sic) outfit”

“is watching the logies and realises how bogan australians talk”

It wasn’t just your average joe that was Twittering about the event however, a lot of insider celebrities were joining in, with updates from Wil Anderson, The Chaser guys, MTV host Ruby Rose and others. Mainstream media painted a politely factual picture of the Logies today, with only News Digital and Ninemsn thus far reporting on the Twitter comments, and this, being specifically about host Gretel Killeen. My own Twitter update was about this amusing distinction;

Logies update

Aside from the entertainment it provided me, I also wondered if event managers, publicists, journalists and marketers are going to take reputation management and social media seriously yet, Gretel Killeen’s reps certainely should…
