While I was researching  Social Media tools, mulling over the build vs. buy debate, I decided to compile a list of FREE tools that are currently available. One great thing about Twitter is the open API, allowing for many a developer to build supplements to the platform. So I thought I’d share what I found. I’ve broken them down into the following categories:

• Desktop Clients
• Mobile
• Follow Management
• Research & Trends
• Tracking & Metrics
• Multimedia Sharing
• Directories & Finding People
• RSS & Syndication
• Other Stuff (miscellaneous)

There is a small part under “Desktop Clients” that involve costs - these are for the more professional-leaning clients that are already being used by companies such as Ford and Comcast.

“Research & Trends” and “Tracking & Metrics” arguably also have some interrelatedness. I treated “Research & Trends” as more outward facing on public Twitter conversations, while “Tracking & Metrics” is more inwards - concerned about your brand, product, service, etc.
