The Year That Was

As the year draws to a close, the online landscape continues to inspire and enrage, change and evolve, and challenge us daily. 2010 was undoubtedly a year full of technological breakthroughs, social challenges and amazing discovery.

Here’s a list of some of my favourite summaries of the year that was:

Google Zeitgeist: How the world searched

#Hindsight2010: Top [...]

Wave Report 2010: The Socialisation of Brands

Some pretty good takeouts from this report from Universal McCann, easy to absorb:

The Subtlemob

Last year, I wrote about wanting to do a flashmob campaign. Since then, there have been many more flashmob happenings, and they’ve continued to entertain and engage us.

Artist Duncan Speakman has turned the flashmob concept and flipped it on head with the subtlemob. Part participatory theatre, part public art, it’s been likened to passing [...]

Social Influence Marketing Report

Razorfish have released the follow up to their excellent trends report, Digital Outlook 2009. Elaborting on the social media area, or as they like to refer to it,”Social Influence Marketing” is their report Fluent.

The report includes data that shows:

The State of the Twittersphere

Hubspot have released version 2 of their great report - The State of the Twittersphere. There are some very interesting results, including the top locations for tweets (of which Sydney is 11th). Some snippets below:

68.68% have not specified a [...]

If you click on the small “Share This” icon at the bottom of this post, you will be privy to dozens of services that allow you to share, distribute and discuss content online. For the uninitiated, it becomes a blur of poppy catch phrase names which make little sense – Spacebook? Hummer? Flaptor? Platxer? Redlicious? [...]

Positivity works, even on Twitter

I love data-driven insights and I came across an analysis of words/phrases that correlate between those Twitter users with a high follower count or those with a low one.

Themos Kalafatis used text mining and data mining techniques with some noteable patterns on how certain words affect your Twitter “popularity”, some examples are below:

Hate and bed [...]

I wish I had a flashmob campaign

I mean who wouldn’t? The viral factor is great, and the entertainment value is fantastic, plus they’re just way too much fun. A flashmob is defined as “a large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual action for a brief time, then quickly disperse”. Some of the more well-known [...]

Your mum….is on Facebook

But you already knew that, right? Because you’re friends with her? Well, you’re not alone. A survey conducted by Accenture revealed that baby boomers (born 1946-1964) are beating Gen Y’rs on social network technology uptake this year by up to 20 times;

Meanwhile Gen Y consumer technology adoption generally is slipping. Have we reached critical mass [...]

What is your real age?

My Facebook news feed has been spammed over the last few weeks with people finding out what their “real/true” age should be according to an app developed by Quiz Monster. According to the app, I’m supposed to be “14 years old”. I thought it would be interesting to track the most used applications since this [...]
